I began to dream of creating a business like this when I realized that there are not enough book covers available for self-published books with non-white protagonists. My husband is a self-published author, and he is Filipino-American. One of his novels features a heroine who is a Filipina-American college student. We had a very hard time finding an image for his book cover that was worthy of representing her.
There are so many stories out there that writers want to tell, and everyone deserves to see themselves in stories. In 2020, the Cooperative Children’s Book Center released a survey about diversity in children’s and young adult literature. The results were abysmal. The number of books published by traditional publishers each year with non-white characters are limited. And yet there are people writing books with the stories they want to tell, and readers who desperately want to read their books. We are hungry for books with characters and narratives that are different from the majority that traditional publishing companies are serving us. Our children are hungry for books with characters that look like themselves.
If you are an indie author and you are looking for a low-cost, pre-made book cover, then check out the options I have for sale and see if one of them works for your story. I originally planned to call this site Books I Want to Read because that’s how I feel about these covers. I want to read the stories behind them.
